Additional Details:
KP Cienega Campground is located at approximately 9,000 feet elevation, making it one of the highest and coolest campgrounds in Arizona.
A small, primitive campground with just five campsites, ideal for campers seeking peace, privacy, and a true backcountry experience. Campsites are available first-come, first-served with no camping fee.
Campsites include picnic tables, fire rings with cooking grills, seasonal drinking water, and vault toilets. There are no hookups or dump station, and RVs are generally limited to about 16 feet.
The KP Trail (#70) begins adjacent to the campground, providing outstanding hiking and backpacking access into the remote Blue Range Primitive Area, one of Arizona's premier wilderness destinations.
The surrounding meadows and forests are excellent for wildlife viewing, with frequent sightings of elk, mule deer, wild turkey, Steller's jays, northern goshawks, and other mountain wildlife. Black bears also inhabit the area, so proper food storage is essential.
Summer temperatures are pleasantly cool thanks to the high elevation, though afternoon thunderstorms are common during the July and August monsoon season. Nights can be cold even in midsummer.
Just a few miles north, the Hannagan Meadow Lodge Restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, providing a welcome opportunity for a hot meal after a day on the trail or exploring the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway.
Pets must always be restrained or on a leash.
Directions:
Directions from Alpine: Drive 27 miles south on US Highway 191 past Hannagan Meadow Resort to a sign that points the way to KP Cienega. Turn east (left) onto the access road and drive 1.3 miles to the campground.
