Additional Details:
Los Burros Campground is one of the White Mountains' hidden gems, offering a quiet, primitive camping experience for visitors who appreciate nature over amenities. Located north of McNary at approximately 7,900 feet, the campground sits on the edge of a scenic mountain meadow surrounded by mature ponderosa pines and scattered aspens.
Unlike many developed campgrounds in the region, Los Burros is intentionally simple. The campground has a limited number of first-come, first-served campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets, but no drinking water, hookups, or trash service, so campers should arrive fully self-contained and pack out everything they bring in.
One of the campground's most unique features is the historic Forest Service Ranger Station, including its old barn and corral, remnants of the early days of forest management that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The surrounding meadows attract abundant wildlife, making the area excellent for birdwatching, wildlife photography, and simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
While there is no lake or stream access directly from the campground, Los Burros is a favorite among hikers, horseback riders, and campers looking for a quiet base camp to explore the surrounding Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. The nearby Los Burros Trail (#631) provides opportunities to experience the area's forests, meadows, and mountain scenery without the crowds found at larger recreation areas.
Summer temperatures are pleasant thanks to the high elevation, while evenings can be cool. Afternoon thunderstorms are common during Arizona's summer monsoon season, so visitors should come prepared for changing mountain weather.
Pets must be restrained on a leash.
Directions:
Directions from McNary: Take the gravel road north (Forest Road 224) through the White Mountain Apache Reservation about 7 miles to the signed turnoff to Los Burros; turn right and proceed about 1/4 mile to the campground.
