Rolfe C. Hoyer Campground is surrounded by a beautiful forest of towering ponderosa pines and graceful aspens at an elevation of approximately 8,300 feet, providing a cool mountain escape from Arizona's summer heat. The peaceful setting is home to abundant wildlife, and it's common to spot Abert's squirrels, chipmunks, mule deer, wild turkey, and even elk wandering through the surrounding forest.
Located near the headwaters of the Little Colorado River, the campground is within easy walking distance of Greer Lakes, making it a favorite destination for anglers. The nearby lakes and river offer excellent opportunities to catch rainbow, brown, brook, and Apache trout while enjoying the quiet beauty of the White Mountains.
Outdoor enthusiasts will also find plenty to explore beyond the campground. Several scenic hiking trails are located just a short drive away, while the White Mountain Scenic Byway and the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway offer spectacular mountain vistas, forests, and wildlife viewing opportunities.
During the summer camping season, visitors may enjoy Forest Service interpretive programs, including guided nature walks and evening presentations at the campground amphitheater, offering a fun and educational way to learn more about the area's unique wildlife, forests, and history.
Being near the town of Greer provides several excellent restaurant and general store options.
Although daytime temperatures are typically mild and comfortable, afternoon thunderstorms are common during Arizona's summer monsoon season from late June through August. Campers should come prepared for occasional rain showers and cool evenings, especially after sunset.
