Additional Details:
Raccoon Campground is located in the East Fork Black River Recreation Area of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest at approximately 7,600 feet elevation.
The campground was developed to replace older campsites that were located too close to the river, helping protect the sensitive streamside environment. The East Fork flows through a scenic valley lined with ponderosa pines, grasses, alders, and riparian hardwoods.
The East Fork of the Black River is just a short walk from the campsites and is renowned for its excellent trout fishing, including rainbow, brown, and wild trout opportunities.
Ideal for fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, birdwatching, photography, and simply enjoying the peaceful forest setting.
Campsites include picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. There are no hookups, showers, or trash service, so campers should pack out all garbage. Seasonal drinking water may be available, but it is wise to bring your own supply or verify availability before arriving.
Summer days are pleasantly cool compared to Arizona's lower elevations, while evenings can become chilly. Afternoon thunderstorms are common during the July and August monsoon season.
Wildlife commonly seen includes elk, mule deer, wild turkey, Abert's squirrels, and numerous bird species. Black bears also inhabit the area, so food should always be stored securely.
Raccoon Campground is typically first-come, first-served, making it a great option for visitors seeking a quieter camping experience along the East Fork.
Pets must always be restrained or on a leash.
